Sobralia recta photo from Maduro

Originally published in Orchids, the magazine of the American Orchid Society.

This species was found in Bocas del Toro, Panama, about 800 m elevation. Collected Sept. 12, 2002 by A. Maduro & E. Olmos 295. The type collection flowered in cultivation. Holotype at MO herbarium; isotype at PMA.

The specific epithet, "recta," refers to the nonreflexed lip.

Plants offered for sale by Woodstream Orchids It was originally sold under the name Sobralia vaginalis. Bill Goldner writes, "Showy short-lived large white flowers with pink lip, produced successively. Only one plant of this species was ever discovered. Fast-growing seedlings. Grow intermediate, with moderately bright-bright light, evenly moist."
